When Hamilton Rugby Club fielded its first team in Grade competition in 1968, the idea of ever having an Old Boys network seemed an impossible concept, since the average age of the playing roster was about 18 years! History now shows, however, that the Club rapidly grew from those early days and it wasn’t too long before the Club had a group of “former” players as well as its current playing roster.

Ongoing support for the Club came naturally to most of these ex players. Many of whom became officials and coaches for the Club. Regular get-togethers were a part of the natural course of events and while Club Membership for former players was introduced in the 80’s, there was no attempt to establish a formal Old Boys organization. Despite the lack of a formal structure, the Old Boys continues to enter teams in Gold Oldies tournaments and organize irregular get-togethers.

In 2002, a small group of ex players decided to establish the Hawks Old Boys Club (Now the Hawks Old Boys and Supporters Club) to not only ensure former players, officials and supporters were kept in touch with what was happening at the Club, but to also raise funds for specific Club projects, especially our junior teams. The “Forked Hawk” logo, developed for the original Golden Oldies team, was adopted as the Old Boys Club logo and a committee formed.

Since that time the OB&S Club has become an integral part of Hamilton Rugby Club, running regular fund raising events, including the annual Hawks Long Lunch as well as staging the annual Old Boys Day at Passmore Oval. The OB&S have also been instrumental in providing the additional personnel and resources for planning and staging major Club events including the 40th Anniversary Dinner and the NHRU Semi Final matches held at Passmore Oval.

Over the years funds from the OB&S Club have been directed into several areas including:

• Safety equipment for junior players – Hamilton Junior Rugby Club was one of the first clubs to offer all registered players FREE mouth guards and head gear, funded totally by the OB&S Club
• Support for players selected in junior touring teams to offset personal costs
• New jumpers for junior teams
• New jumpers for Primary schools in the Hawks school feeder area
• Assistance for senior rep players with personal costs on rep duty
• Assistance to the families of former players in need
